Spinning Some Magic

I started working on my butterfly garden this weekend, replenishing the host plants that died last winter. Butterflies and dragonflies love the heat, and I can attest to the fact that it is hot. Last week I went to the local garden center and picked out a few plants. The foundation plant is called a Butterfly Weed, a member of the milkweed family. It pretty much looks like a weed, but butterflies are drawn to it and typically lay their eggs on the leaves. The eggs hatch into caterpillars and the plant I chose already had 3 fat ones munching on the leaves. There was a young guy at the checkout counter, who pointed out the caterpillars and asked if I’d like to make another selection. I gave him a quick lesson on horticulture and metamorphosis, pointing out that the caterpillars are future Monarch Butterflies. He was fascinated! Well, maybe not, but he did learn something.

Sunday visitors…

This morning I stepped out the front door with coffee in hand to enjoy the early coolness and to my surprise I had visitors! For some reason each spring the local quackers leave the lake and visit the nearby neighborhood. Two couples were strolling around the cul de sac. I went to fetch a couple slices of bread and I quickly became their new bff. Maybe they’re looking for a safe place to nest or just a hand-out. Anyway, as I’m tossing small pieces of bread to the quackers, one of the females stayed some distance from me, while the other three were practically eating out of my hand. So I tossed a few her way. Well, both males put their heads down and drove her off her share of breakfast. Now I get it…the fickle men are both interested in the new hottie!

Their new girlfriend is younger and more adoring of the males. I wonder which one will win her over?

The poor outcast is probably last years model, but she has that knowing look in her eyes. Too bad that she will have to settle for the hottie’s cast-off. Oh well, it’s a learning experience. Today’s hottie will be tomorrow’s outcast. Fickle men!

Smiling Sunday

Just some quickie humor for today…I found this puzzle online and remembered it from my youth. Somewhat remarkable, considering. Here it is:

Question: Which side of a cat has the most fur?

cat hissing

You better get this right!

Answer: Why, the outside, silly!

Smiling Sunday,

Drats…dreads and dogs!

I was watching the Westminster Dog Show a couple weeks ago and one of the entries in the working group was a Hungarian Komondor. It brought to mind a young lady I saw in the hospital cafeteria last week. She had dreadlocks or dredlocks, as you like it.

Now, the young lady in the cafeteria, a hospital employee by the way, had somewhat neater dreads than those pictured above. I guess it isn’t as permanent as a tattoo or a body piercing, but one would have to shave their head to rid themselves of the flora and fauna, not to mention any hitchhikers that may have taken up residence. In my line of work ”hand-washing saves lives”.  What do you think about the hygienic quality of those locks?

I read an article online concerning dreadlock maintenance. The recommended method for washing them is to pull a nylon (panty hose?) over your head and proceed to wet your stocking head and apply shampoo to the outside of the nylon and gently massage the masses. I wonder how long it takes to rinse the soap out? Anyway, it seems the most time-consuming part of the dreaded beauty regimen is to make sure the locks are thoroughly dry. The website I visited warned that if the dreadlocks remained damp, it could lead to “dread rot”.

Drats! The dreaded dread rot! Would you care to guess that the person below sleeps on his back a lot?
